Full Dentures

Full dentures replace all upper or lower teeth and can be fixed or removable. Fixed dentures are secured by dental implants and have very little chance of slippage. With the All On Four procedure, as few as four dental implants may be needed to secure the denture in place, greatly increasing the success rate and satisfaction of the denture.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used to replace several missing teeth and can also be fixed or removable. Similar to a dental bridge, the dentures can be secured using either dental crowns or dental implants.

Implant Dentures

Implant dentures offer a number of benefits compared to removable dentures including:

  • Better retention, no chance of slippage
  • Improved health of bone and gums
  • Ability to eat without restrictions
  • No adhesives needed
  • More natural look and feel

Implant-supported dentures are the most highly-recommended denture solution. We can use as few as four implants to support your denture, but more can be used. However, not every patient is eligible. You’ll have to have a certain amount of healthy jawbone structure to support the implants. But since only four are needed, more patients are eligible than would be for full implants.

Implant dentures require less maintenance and upkeep. No adhesives are needed, so you don’t need to worry about taking dentures out and thoroughly cleaning them. No removal means no special soaks to clean them either. Simply brush and floss like you normally would and continue with regular dentist visits.

With traditional dentures, your bone continues to deteriorate. Over time, you’ll have to reline or replace your dentures as the bone changes, sometimes multiple times. This isn’t a worry with implant dentures. Implants help to stop the bone from deteriorating, so the fit of them won’t change over time.

Dentures & Partials What to Expect

The first step in the tooth replacement process is a consultation with Dr. Prendergast. In addition to a thorough exam and evaluation of your oral health, Dr. Prendergast will discuss your health history, concerns you may have and your aesthetic goals for your new smile.

Patient education and ongoing communication is an integral part of your treatment process at Infinity Dental.

The placement of a new denture will require several visits over a period of time, depending on the type of denture being placed. If dental implants are being used to secure a traditional denture, Dr. Prendergast will surgically place the post into the jaw bone. A period of several months is typically needed for healing of the soft tissues.

Dental impressions will be taken for creating a custom fit denture that will complement your natural appearance and replicate your natural teeth. Dr. Prendergast takes the time to create a new denture that meets your cosmetic goals and fits comfortably in your mouth.

Your final denture will be either placed or permanently secured to the implanted posts once it is complete. We will discuss how to care for your new denture or implant supported denture so that you can enjoy the best possible outcome.

Daily oral hygiene and routine dental care will play a key role in the long term integrity of your new smile and provide the opportunity to address any concerns early and avoid complex problems down the road.

Dentures & Partials FAQs

What can you not eat with dentures?

Patients with dentures are told to avoid eating hard or chewy foods. These include popcorn, apples, carrots, candy, gum, etc. Chewy meats should also be avoided because they may put added stress and pressure onto dentures.

How painful is getting dentures?

When first fitted for dentures patients may report some discomfort and gum irritation. As your mouth and gums begin to adjust to your dentures this should go away.

Why do dentures shorten your life?

Dentures are sometimes linked to having a shorter life. This is due to the idea that dentures make it more difficult to chew foods, causing malnutrition in some patients. Patients who wear dentures may also be at a higher risk for muscle weakening which may result in injuries, pain, tears, and breaks.

Can I get implants after having dentures?

Yes, you can recieve an implant-secured dentures if you currently have a removable denture. We will ensure that you have sufficient jaw bone and are in good oral health before we plan your dental implant treatment.

Are implant dentures easy to care for?

It’s easier to care for implant-secured dentures versus traditional removable dentures. Because implants hold dentures in place, they are not removable. You can brush and floss your dentures as you would natural teeth, although we will recommend water flossers or interdental floss to carefully clean the dentures and gum tissue.

Will dentures change my face shape?

Yes. Dentures can positively change your face shape. When you have one or more missing teeth for a long time, you can lose natural jaw bone that contributes to your natural face structure. As a result, you can experience facial sagging or drooping. Dentures, particularly implant-supported dentures, can combat facial sagging with false teeth and dental implant posts.
