How to Handle a Dental Emergency

Dental injuries happen more often than you think. It is always possible to injure teeth in normal daily activities. In the case that you experience a dental emergency, it is important to contact Infinity Dental at (847) 447-6637. Dr. Thomas Predergast keeps appointments open for dental emergencies, but there are some important steps to take to minimize problems before you can get to our Fox Lake, IL dental office.

What is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency can be categorized as an issue involving the teeth, bone structure, or the connective tissue in the mouth. If you are unsure of whether you are experiencing a dental emergency, some examples may include intense oral pain, lost permanent teeth, severe swelling, bleeding, or a dental infection. Dr. Prendergast and his team can help stop bleeding, reduce swelling, and alleviate your pain. He may also create a treatment plan for you if you require a dental restoration or cosmetic care following emergency treatment.

Common Dental Emergencies

Cracked or chipped tooth: If you crack or chip a tooth, gently rinse your mouth with warm water. If you are experiencing any swelling, apply a cold compress to your cheek.

Dental abscess: If left untreated, a dental abscess can lead to more infections in your mouth and in other areas of your body. Please visit us as soon as possible to receive the treatment you need.

Knocked out tooth: In some cases, we can reinsert a knocked-out tooth. However, this will require quick action. If you can, carefully place the tooth back into the socket. If this is not possible, you can place the tooth in milk or saliva to preserve it while you make your way to our office.

Avoiding Dental Injuries

Follow these tips to prevent dental emergencies from happening:

  • Never try to open things with your teeth.
  • Avoid hard foods that can crack your teeth such as hard candy and ice
  • Always wear a protective mouthguard when playing sports.
