Porcelain veneers are one of the most popular ways to transform a smile. They could fix discoloration, chips, gaps, and misshapen teeth all at once. And the best part? With proper care, they can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, sometimes even longer. But veneers aren’t a “set it and forget it” solution. They’re an investment in your smile, and like any investment, they benefit from a little ongoing attention.
At Infinity Dental, Dr. Thomas Prendergast takes great care designing custom veneers that look natural and fit beautifully. And we want to help you keep them that way.

Treat Your Veneers Like Your Natural Teeth
You don’t need fancy products or complicated routines to care for your veneers. The same habits that keep your natural teeth healthy will also keep your veneers in great shape.
- Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Floss daily.
- Use a non-abrasive toothpaste, you can look for one that doesn’t contain baking soda or whitening agents, which can be too harsh for the porcelain surface. If you’re not sure which toothpaste to choose, just ask us at your next visit.
- And don’t forget your regular dental checkups. Dr. Prendergast needs to examine your veneers just like your natural teeth to make sure everything is staying in good shape and your gums remain healthy.
A Few Things to Avoid
While porcelain is strong and durable, it isn’t indestructible. Here are a few things worth keeping in mind.
Watch what you bite into. Veneers handle everyday eating just fine. But biting directly into hard foods like ice, hard candy, or bones can chip or crack the porcelain. Same goes for using your teeth as tools, such as opening packages, tearing tags off clothing, or cracking nuts. Your veneers weren’t designed for that, and neither were your natural teeth.
Be mindful of habits. Grinding or clenching your teeth at night puts extra stress on veneers just like it does on natural teeth. If you already wear a nightguard, keep using it. If you notice jaw soreness or worn teeth, mention it to Dr. Prendergast so we can help protect your veneers.
Limit stain-causing drinks. Porcelain resists stains better than natural enamel, but it isn’t stain-proof. Coffee, tea, red wine, and dark sodas can eventually dull the surface over time. Rinsing with water after drinking these beverages helps, and regular dental cleanings will remove surface buildup before it becomes noticeable.
What to Expect Over Time
Your veneers won’t change color, but your natural teeth might. That means the teeth surrounding your veneers could darken over time while the veneers stay the same shade. Professional whitening could help even things out if that happens.
Also, keep in mind that the bonding cement holding your veneers in place can wear down slightly over the years. That’s normal. During your regular exams, Dr. Prendergast will check the bond and let you know if any touch-up is needed.
A Little Care Goes a Long Way
Porcelain veneers are a beautiful, long-lasting solution that can completely change how you feel about your smile. They’re an investment worth protecting. By sticking with a good daily hygiene routine, avoiding a few no-no foods and habits, and keeping up with your regular dental visits, you could enjoy your new smile for many years to come.
